For example, if you aim to attend a university in China, you will need to pass the HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi), a standardised exam for Chinese language proficiency. This exam, comparable in importance to the British TOEFL, has 9 levels. For university admission, levels 4 to 6 are required for bachelor's, master's, and postgraduate degrees, respectively. At level 6, you must know about 1.5 times more words, characters, and grammatical structures than at level 4, meaning the training programme must be adjusted accordingly.

Find an Experienced Teacher
The next step is to find an experienced and qualified teacher to guide you towards your goal. This is crucial, especially at the beginning, when you need to focus on phonetics. Pronunciation and intonation are far more significant in Chinese than in European languages, making it essential to hear correct speech without an accent, practise speaking, and receive feedback from the teacher. Online tutorials and videos can complement, but not replace, lessons with a tutor.

Moreover, each Chinese character conveys a complete semantic image, allowing meaning to be understood instantly and holistically, much like viewing a picture. In contrast, alphabetic languages require reading each letter in sequence to comprehend a word. This “Chinese” approach to reading is often used in teaching speed reading.
